Maine's cost of living is significantly lower than Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York — the states most Maine retirees come from. A home that costs $800,000 in the Boston suburbs sells for $350,000 in Midcoast Maine. Property taxes on that home will run roughly $4,000–$6,000 per year. And unlike Florida's crowded retirement corridors, you're buying into something that actually feels like a place.
Maine Doesn't Tax Your Social Security
This is the headline number. Maine fully exempts Social Security income from state income tax. Military and government pension income gets a deduction up to $30,000. Other retirement account income (401k, IRA) gets a $10,000 deduction. For a couple drawing Social Security plus a pension, the effective Maine income tax burden is often close to zero.
